iCanConnect/NJ

iCanConnect is administered by the New Jersey Commission for the Blind and Visually Impaired (CBVI), in collaboration with the Center for Sensory & Complex Disabilities at The College of New Jersey (TCNJ).

These two organizations in New Jersey are leading the endeavor to provide distant communications equipment to individuals with combined vision and hearing loss. Through their efforts, individuals who meet the eligibility requirements have been provided equipment such as smartphones, computers, braille devices, iPads and have received the necessary training to be successful and empowered to use their equipment. New Jersey has embraced the unique opportunity to collaborate with the Deaf-Blind experts and programs across the state to identify best practices and streamline their services as the program has evolved over the years.

Here are what some New Jersey consumers have to say about their equipment:

“…the equipment has really been life-altering for me.  I no longer strain to read a tiny font on a too small monitor or wait for my old computer to finally spring to life.”-Caryn Fitzpatrick

“It’s a really good program, it provides you with things you need. It makes me feel like everybody else.”-Ava Bullis (age 10)

“If I didn’t have the apps and tools on my iPhone that I received through iCanConnect, I’d be lost,” -Alice Eaddy

“I’m going to be a guru of adaptive apps,” said the 59-year-old Millville, N.J., volunteer, who was born premature, with limited vision and hearing. Without her tools, “I would never be able to pull off all the magic I do on a daily basis,” she said.
