Successful Transition Experiences Preparing Students (STEPS)

The STEPS Program is a summer transition program designed for high school students with vision loss who have employment-based goals in preparation to pursue competitive, integrated employment upon high school graduation.

Program Overview

The students participate in a variety of Pre-Employment Transition Service activities and experiences that include, but are not limited to team-building, interactive and informative workshops, career exploration, person-centered planning, technology support, independent living skills, and blindness skills.  These initiatives are intended to support the development of the following skill sets:

  • Work-Based Learning Experiences
  • Job Exploration
  • Post-Secondary Education Counseling
  • Workplace Readiness
  • Self-Advocacy

Services Provided

Since 2006, the STEPS program has evolved every year to stay relevant to the students’ needs and growing needs of the community.  STEPS is a full-immersion experience; in-person, on-campus, and in the surrounding community.  To assess the students’ skills, students participate in facilitating person-centered activities, team meetings, social gatherings, 1:1 assessments as well as small and large group activities.

Eligibility Requirements

All high school students must be affiliated with the NJ Commission for the Blind and Visually Impaired and be referred by their CBVI Transition Counselor.
