The College Preparation Experience (CPE) is a two-week program designed to provide high school students (who are blind, vision-impaired, and Deaf-blind) with college-based experiences in preparation for entry into college or university.
Program Overview
The students participate in a variety of Pre-Employment Transition Service activities and experiences that include, but are not limited to: team-building, interactive and informative workshops, career exploration, person-centered planning, technology support, independent living skills, and Orientation and Mobility instruction. These initiatives are intended to support the development of the following skill sets that are applicable to the college environment:
- Work-Based Learning Experiences
- Job Exploration
- Post-Secondary Education Counseling
- Workplace Readiness
- Self-Advocacy
Services Provided
Each year, the CPE program has evolved to meet the growing needs of our high school students who aspire to attend college. To assess the students’ skills, students participate in facilitated person-centered activities; live lessons, meetings, social gatherings, 1:1 assessments as well as small and large groups (and classes); to prepare students for what to expect when they go to college.
We look forward to this summer’s program being a safe, invaluable experience and the best iteration of CPE that we have come up with yet!
Upon completion of the program, we provide the students and The Commission for the Blind and Visually Impaired with a comprehensive report, to support transition planning and their future endeavors.
Eligibility Requirements
All high school students must be affiliated with the NJ Commission for the Blind and Visually Impaired and must be referred by their CBVI Transition Counselor.
Application
It is imperative that interested candidates learn the expectations of the program by attending the CPE Open House (date/time/format will be shared by their CBVI Transition Counselor). Then, applications will be disseminated immediately following the CPE Open House.
